Alphabet of Jasmine
Reminiscent of his work, Alphabet of Jasmine is a retrospective exhibition on the famous Syrian poet, Nizar Qabbani. The title ‘Alphabet of Jasmine’ is inspired by the last collection of works published by Qabbani’s family in 2004, six years after his death. The jasmine is a symbol that represents Qabbani’s hometown, Damascus, that “granted (Qabbani) the alphabet of Jasmine”. As a result, this exhibition celebrates his work, mainly the latest, with a lot of emphasis on his Arab and specifically Syrian origin. For the purpose of this topic, it was only appropriate to experiment with ways to manipulate and explore Arabic typography in a sense that could relate to Qabbani’s passion for poetry and his homeland. Thus, this project creates an identity for several communication pieces—posters, tickets and an exhibition catalogue—as to form the overall exhibition that promotes and relates to Qabbani’s contributions, works, and mainly his origin. Nostalgia is one of the key elements in this campaign design, and it is represented as floral Syrian tile motifs. The poster transforms Qabbani’s achievements into a playful, typographic visual form.
